News Update July 2008: Following the Refusal of the Planning Application, GB-BIO has investigated the possibility of relocating to an alternative site, as suggested in the refusal notice. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to identify such a site. Consequently, we are left with no option but to appeal against the refusal at Tansterne. For further details, please contact ERYC Strategic Planning.
a new type of power station...
Welcome to the web site of gb-bio, a locally-owned and run company, set up to create and manage the Tansterne Straw-burning Power Station in Holderness, East Yorkshire, UK.
Straw burning is a fantastic way of producing the energy that we all need and use. Arable crops like wheat and barley use carbon from the air when they grow. This same carbon is released when the straw is burnt, so the process is known as carbon-neutral. This means that the generation of electricity doesn't add fossil carbon to the atmosphere, unlike coal-, oil- or gas-fired power stations.
Straw is a by-product of the huge areas of arable crops grown in East Yorkshire - it is what is left when the grain has been removed. Unlike dedicated "biofuels" (eg willow coppice or miscanthus grass) it is already available to use for our energy needs. It is simply a question of recognising this currently un-tapped energy resource and putting it to use for everybody's benefit. For more information on straw
as fuel and why it is important, please see the biomass page.
The planning application for this project was submitted in November 2006. To see the Environmental Report which accompanied the planning application, please click here. For more information about the plant please see the proposal page.
We hope to provide, on this site, all the information you need about this carbon-neutral power station. If you have any further questions you are very welcome to contact us.
